Support Community Members Facing Food Insecurity

/ 150

The Giving Box Program ensures equal access to the fresh, seasonal, sustainably-grown food that Tahoe Food Hub sources from local farms within 150-miles of North Lake Tahoe.

Donate a Giving Box for just $20 and provide a Truckee-Tahoe family with fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms.

Since March 2020, we have distributed over 6,000 Giving Boxes to local community members in need of fresh, healthy produce! Our Giving Box initiative started during the fall of 2019 as an affordable way for people to donate $20 and provide a local family a weekly, free, box of farm fresh produce. Funds raised pay for the boxes ensuring local farms are compensated fairly for the good food they grow. Before the Coronavirus outbreak, an average of 2-3 boxes were being donated per week. After the onset of COVID-19, The Tahoe Food Hub saw an increase in donations and has been able to expand the program to increase the number of boxes distributed weekly. Initially the Giving Boxes were designed for restaurant employees who had been laid-off or had compromised hours, but thanks to donations provided by local donors and organizations, Giving Boxes were expanded to include anyone facing food insecurity. We have partnered with the Truckee Tahoe Unified School District (TTUSD) and their food pantry program to distribute Giving Boxes to families in need as well as families whose children attend Head Start Placer County.

Since the onset of Covid-19, we have found there’s a need in our community that is not being met. The Giving Box Program provides those facing food insecurity an opportunity to receive local, seasonal, and sustainably grown food. Whether it is someone's first time facing food insecurity or someone needing fresh produce to supplement contributions from a food bank, the Giving box is here to help bridge that gap.

A BIG thank you to all our donors! Alison and Desmond Elder with Elder Group Tahoe Real Estate, a partner of Engel & Volkers, helped start the fundraising back in April with a 100% match for the first $3,000! An anonymous donor followed with a $5,000 matching grant and Tahoe Mountain Resort Foundation offered a $10,000 matching grant after that. When combined with donations from Truckee Rotary, JP Morgan Chase, Alpenglow Sports, Raley's One Market and all the private donors, we have raised a total of $175K for the program!
